Why is having an emotionally available caregiver so important for an infant or toddler?

· Children who have emotionally available caregivers develop trust and a healthy attachment with their caretakers. An emotionally available caregiver is able to read, listen to and respond appropriately to a baby's emotional signals.

· Emotional availability in the first three years makes the difference in how babies manage their lives and their relationships.

· Babies who have emotionally available parents/caregivers learn more and are more psychologically stable. They show more resiliency and ability to be independent and to problem solve.

What is the difference between PIPE and Emotional Beginnings?

PIPE is a curriculum developed for parenting educators to use with parents of infants and toddlers. Emotional Beginnings is a staff development curriculum and model to be used by childcare professionals who provide training for infant and toddler caregivers. Both curriculums focus on ways to foster positive emotional connections between infants, toddlers and their caretakers.

What is special about PIPE?

PIPE is an interactive curriculum where parent and baby are learning together to build a positive relationship with each other. The curriculum acknowledges the parent as the most consistent and pervasive force shaping the life of their child. The parenting educator provides parents with information as well as becoming a coach and a mentor, which creates a partnership with the parent.

What is special about Emotional Beginnings?

It is an on-going staff development curriculum and model which includes classes and Site Visits to help caregivers apply emotional development theory to the day-to-day care of infants and toddlers.

What does it mean that your curriculums are research based?

Research done by numerous Early Child Development theorists and researchers has been synthesized so that it can be shared with parents or childcare providers in a very practical manner. Both curriculums are based on the work of Liz Bates, T. Berry Brazelton, Robert Emde, Nathan Fox, Stanley Greenspan, Robert Harmon, George Morgan, Joy Osofsky, Arnold Sameroff, Louis Sander, Allan Sroufe, Daniel Stern, Edward Tronick, and as well as the theoretical perspectives of John Bowlby, Stella Chess, Jean Piaget, Rene Spitz, Lev Vygotsky, Conrad Waddington, and Donald Winnicott.

What is the special instructional process used for teaching PIPE and Emotional Beginnings?

The instructional model is a four-step process. It includes not only a presentation of concepts and information but also an opportunity to see how the information applies to building a relationship between caregiver and child. Caregivers then practice these new relationship-building skills with the support of a knowledgeable and caring coach. Integral to the instructional process is an opportunity for caregivers to evaluate, from their own experience, how these new skills enhance their relationship with a child.

Can I buy the curriculum without doing the training?

Yes, however, there is a substantial savings available on the cost of the curriculum when it is bought in conjunction with a training.

Is the two-day PIPE training a Train the Trainer program?

No, the two-day PIPE training was designed for parent educators who will work directly with parents. We do have a Train the Trainer program if an agency wishes to have certified PIPE trainers on their own staff.

Does the PIPE curriculum come in Spanish?

Yes the complete set is now available in Spanish. View the Spanish Sample Topic.
