The Science of Love

A review by Jill Meyer

Through the article the Science of Love, I discovered that Stanford University and a group called CCARE are doing research to see if people can be taught to be compassionate. They are studying if and how the compassion meditation techniques of Buddhism can be adapted into a secular approach that can measurably increase an individual’s compassion. This is a fascinating and potentially far reaching idea. If compassion exercises can indeed be taught to our young it could bring about great changes in our culture. In addition, putting these teachings into practice among those in our society more prone towards violence towards others could be revolutionary. What hope it would bring for helping the abusive parent or the violent offender. Could we eventually add pieces of that type of training into PIPE to use on a regular basis with our clients? This could potentially be helpful in assisting them in being the kind of emotionally available care givers we long for.
